On Tuesday, 23rd September 2014, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, the Ambassador of Japan to Malawi and Mr. Abdul Gaffar Jakhura, Chairman of Gift of the Givers Foundation signed a grant contract for the Project for Supply of Safe and Potable Water in Mangochi District. The grant signed amounting to US$110, 084 is provided under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

Mangochi district has a population of 970,899 people but there are only 2,638 boreholes. Many people, especially women and children, walk 3 to 5km to get to the nearest borehole and then wait a long queues to draw safe water from the borehole. This practice has a negative impact on the lives of women and children. The women are not able to farm or fully participate in other income generating activities and the children are either are late or absent from classes hence increasing school absenteeism and dropout rates.

The grant provided from the Government of Japan will facilitate the construction of 20 boreholes in 18 villages in Mangochi District. It is therefore expected that after project completion about 12,000 people living in the targeted communities will be able to easily access clean water.
